Our History

Second Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church - Since 1966

“And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock, I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” With these words, Jesus spoke the church into existence and Second Mt. Olive’s legacy of love, faith, and hope began. When Rev. Peter Taylor set out on December 19. 1966, he did not have a sanctuary or edifice and along with ten believers, he held worship services in temporary dwellings until a building could be purchased. The church progressed under Pastor Taylor’s leadership. In 1975, grief-struck the church with the passing of Rev. Taylor on December 15th. After a period of mourning, the members had the task of finding a new shepherd for the church.

Under God’s direction, Rev. Herbert Piro became pastor and continued to lead Second Mt. Olive on their legacy of love, faith, and hope. He served faithfully for eighteen years. The Second Mt. Olive family witnessed the calling of several ministers and the legacy continues. The church knowing God promised in Jeremiah 3:15; “And I will give you pastors according to mine own heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding,” began seeking God for a new shepherd to continue their legacy of love, faith, and hope. On June 7, 1994, Minister Arthur Ray Young was called to Pastor Second Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church.

He was installed as pastor on July 24, 1994. Because the legacy of love, faith, and hope had been ordered and ordained by God, Second Mount Olive continued the path set by God. Favor was shown toward Pastor Young on the day of Pentecost, and the format has been similar to that of the church in Acts 2:47 which states: “Praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”

Under Pastor Young’s leadership, the church has witnessed much growth both spiritually and numerically. Many new ministries have been established, in which the members may participate to meet their spiritual needs. By way of the preaching of God’s Word and establishing these ministries, Second Mt. Olive has stood as a pillar in the Fifth Ward community, pointing men, women, boys, and girls to the heavenly way. In the midst of world turmoil, in the face of strife and war, and at times when world idols are crumbling, this church has been moving forward, carrying the banner for Jesus Christ, our Captain for fifty-two years. God has blessed us to move from our previous location on 2523 Chew Street to worshipping in our new sanctuary at 5214 Cavalcade Street.

Because of Pastor Young’s dedication to God’s call, his teaching and preaching has led many souls to Christ. He is a faithful servant of God who has stood strong in times of adversity and heartache to keep Second Mount Olive moving on with its legacy of love, faith, and hope. Pastor Young went to be with the Lord on July 9, 2020. We continue to honor his legacy and his labor of love in Second Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

With God's help and guidance on March 13, 2022, Pastor Bryan O. Morris, Sr., accepted the call to become the 4th shepherd of the Second Mt. Olive Baptist Church. On August 14, 2022 Pastor Morris was officially installed as Senior Pastor by the grace of God. Within a short period of time Pastor Morris has been instrumental in many souls being added to the church and the Body of Christ. Pastor Morris has exemplified humility as a servant leader, and believes his vision that "We're Better Together".
